Learn how to:
  • Read standard notation (better);
  • Blend with others to create beautiful harmonies and rhythmic textures;
  • Play complex chords and chord changes;
  • Use your right hand in intricate and subtle ways;
  • Read and play complex rhythms;
  • Get a good overall sound & create unique textures.
We begin every meeting with exercises: playing scales, reading rhythmic figures, practicing right hand technique. After exercises, we play selections from our repertoire, striving to combine our parts in a lovely way. Most evenings, we play some tunes from previous sessions, and concentrate our main effort on our works in progress. During Spring 2005, we worked on A.C. Jobim's "Corcovado," Laurindo Almeida's "Choro de Adeus," George Gershwin's "Summertime," Thelonius Monk's "Blue Monk" and John Dowland's "Lachrimae Antiquae." In this Fall session, we will play these tunes, and learn others. Email Kay

We play from scores presented in standard notation. When you enroll, Kay will consult with you about your level, then give you a part for each of our tunes. You can practice your parts at home, and be prepared to work on them in class. We hope that you won't let lack of reading experience prevent you from joining. If you have basic music-reading skills, you are welcome to join. We'll help you become a better reader and player. This class is guaranteed to improve your reading. Email Kay

Much ensemble playing consists of intermingled melody or harmony lines. But many tunes in our repertoire include chordal accompaniment for texture and rhythmic support. The accompaniment chords are complex, the changes come quickly, and the rhythm must be played precisely. Because this type of chord playing requires special skill, we practice several exercises to develop our abilities as chord players. We also discuss chord theory (one of Kay's favorite subjects!).
