The Brazilian Guitar Book (with companion
CD) by Nelson Faria Every time I open this book, I find gorgeous and surprising chord progressions. The Brazilian Guitar Book has opened the world of Brazilian guitar to me. The author does an excellent job of explaining Brazilian rhythms and styles, and he has selected beautiful and interesting pieces to use as examples. Until I studied with this book, I would never have imagined the shapes, voice leading and progressions it presents so abundantly. The Brazilian Guitar Book draws examples from well-known Brazilian guitarists. This book will be most useful to players of intermediate level. Includes companion CD. Unequivocally the best Brazilian guitar book I have seen (and I've seen quite a few). $26 |

The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine 500+ pages This user-friendly, clearly written and thorough book OPENED MY EYES to the secrets of jazz. I never thought I'd understand jazz magic, but after reading this book I do! Which isn't to say that I can play it -- but, if I decide to become a jazzhead, at least now I know what to practice and why (and in the meantime my playing has become much more thoughtful and subtle). This book was written for players of all instruments, and not specifically for guitarists. Nevertheless, I found it very easy to apply the information to guitar. The Jazz Theory Book explains chord construction and the II-V-I progression, scale theory, the blues, "I've Got Rhythm" changes, slash chords, the bebop and pentatonic scales, a bit of jazz history, how to read a lead sheet and memorize tunes and a reharmonization. Includes an excellent jazz glossary, so you can communicate effectively with jazz musicians. $38 |
